Celebrating Chinese New Year - Year of the Dog

Posted Kevin's 2018 Adventure

in 2018, Chinese New Year began on February 16 and ends March 2, leaving plenty of room for celebration!

I attended a festivity in Saskatoon and it was nothing short of amazing. From the bright coloured decor to the remarkable array of entertainment, I couldn't help but feel the energy generated by the over 700 attendees.

There are 12 signs in the Chinese zodiac, with each year in the 12-year cycle represented by an animal. For 2018, that animal is the dog. If you were born in 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 or 2018 - then congratulations, you are in the year of the dog club!

According to Chinese astrology your lucky colours are red, green, purple, and your lucky numbers are three, four, and nine.

Fun fact - In Saskatchewan, the number of people with Chinese ethnicity or ancestry increased by 7,980 or 72% from 2006 to 2016 to reach a total of 19,080. This event provided a special opportunity to experience the traditions, beauty and spirit of our fellow Chinese Saskatchewanians. The program was packed with entertainment including singing, kung-fu and various dance performances that had everyone on their feet.

I had such a good time that I'm looking forward to next year's celebrations already!
