When a story starts with two Saskatchewan artists meeting for the first time while sailing on an ice breaker along the west coast, you know it is going to be a good one!
Geoff Phillips and I were part of the Canada C3 Expedition, an epic 150-day sailing journey from Toronto to Victoria via the Northwest Passage. Through this unprecedented journey, Canada C3 was sharing the stories of coastal communities and connecting Canadians from coast to coast.
Now, as old sailors do, each time I visit Maple Creek I go see Geoff and his wife Connie. The Phillips are what I call a power-art couple. They are constantly creating unique artistic and educational projects. They love art so much that their house is called the Art House, you can knock on the door and ask to see the pieces inside - some are for sale, others are commissions.
Every time I visit the Art House, I am impressed by how dedicated Geoff is to his art. He and the canvas have practically merged into one paintbrush that exudes curiousity for our environment and for those who populate these lands.
Geoff and Connie also created a piece of art on their fence for all of us to enjoy and interact with. They just ask for one thing in exchange - please tag them when you do, as they get great pleasure from seeing people fly away with their brand new, colourful wings!
