This past weekend I had the wonderful opportunity of visiting Saskatchewan's Northern country in La Ronge for the 32nd Don Allen Saskaloppet. Classic-style cross-country skiing is new to me as I've tried it only once before in Hudson Bay a month prior. I was lent a set of skis and poles from Fresh Air Experience, and offered words of advice from everyone I asked. Lucky for me, the Saskaloppet is a great family event so no one even noticed I wasn't very good. With over 300 skiers signed up and 8 different distances, the Saskaloppet truly offers something for everyone and every skill level. There is even an overnight option called the Kupesewin for those looking for a little more adventure and distance. Incentives of hot chocolate, hot dogs, and snacks at each checkpoint, run by over 100 volunteers, were also great motivators to keep pushing on. Overall, it was a great event and a fantastic time spent in the North. It so successful in fact, that I have now found myself the owner of a shiny new set of skis and poles to continue on with building up my cross-country ski skills in my personal time. Check out my video of this great event below:
