As I looked around, everyone had a smile on their face. The sun was shining and it was 6 degrees in the middle of February. To my right, there was ice-sailing, to my left, snow-cricket. The game of shinny was about to begin and the sleigh-rides were running all day long. Hole-ympics, the most anticipated event was just about to kick-off. What an awesome day! Welcome to the Waskimo Winter Festival in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Waskimo started in 1975 and with help from media outlets, sponsors and volunteers, continued until 2003 when “The Big Dig” started on Wascana Lake and put a halt to the Waskimo festivities.
After a 14 year hiatus, the original event founders re-united and brought back the event for more than 5000 people to enjoy on Family Day.
